Sailing on the Lauwersmeer

Are you looking for an open sailing area? Then choose the sailing route that takes you to one of the most beautiful waters in Groningen. National Park the Lauwersmeer consists of approximately 2000 hectares of water. On the Lauwersmeer you are allowed to sail a maximum of twelve kilometers per hour. This is to keep the peace for the many birds that have their nesting grounds here. Enjoy the peace and quiet on the water and be amazed by nature. The Lauwersmeer can be reached via the Reitdiep. Along the way, you can moor at the marinas in Lauwersoog, Oostmahorn or Zoutkamp. Would you prefer to spend the night on the water? Then moor at one of the special recreational islands in the middle of the Lauwersmeer.

Discover Groningen by water

Choose a special sailing route that takes you right through the city of Groningen. This way you will discover the beautiful and characteristic city from the water. Start your route at the Jachthaven in Midwolda. From the marina, sail via the Blauwe Passage towards the Nieuwe Kanaal. Continue in the direction of Nieuwolda via the Termunterzijldiep. On the way, you can choose to make a stop in Delfzijl to explore the city or stay the night. After sailing towards Delfzijl follow the Eemskanaal towards the city of Groningen. When you enter Groningen, you can moor in the Oosterhaven. The marina is located in the middle of the city so you can walk to the cosy terraces and shopping streets within a few minutes.

Along the way you may pass locks or bridges that you have to operate yourself. You can do this by pressing a button or by using a special self-service key. This key is available at the marina in Midwolda. You only need to buy the key once and you can use it for most sailing routes in Groningen. Check before you go whether you need a self-service key. That way you won’t encounter any unpleasant surprises.
