Discover Utrecht by water
The province of Utrecht has many beautiful sailing routes through natural areas and atmospheric medieval towns. For example, one day you can cruise peacefully through the Vinkeveense Plassen and the other day through the charming canals of Utrecht. The waterways in the province of Utrecht offer numerous possibilities.
Utrecht has a wide variety of waterways. In this article you will find a sailing route for a wonderful midweek on the water. Of course, you can always adapt or shorten the sailing route to your own wishes.
Before you get on the water, it is good to know that the clearance is 2.20 metres with a maximum draught of 1.40 metres. The Utrecht sailing route starts at the Noordersluis locks in Utrecht. Here, you sail towards the Zuidersluis. During the first day of sailing, you will see the beautiful city of Nieuwegein glide by. After this, you will continue to the Dutch IJsel via the narrow Doorslagsluis.
A historic cruise
During the cruise, you will pass several medieval towns in the Green Heart of Utrecht, such as Woerden, Oudewater and Montfoort. After passing the Goejanverwellesluis lock you will sail via the Oude Rijn towards Woerden. Here you can moor in the harbour and have a lovely stroll through the medieval fortified town. After visiting Woerden, you continue towards the Kromme Mijdrecht which flows into the Amstel.
The Vinkeveense Plassen
When you follow the Amstel towards the Wavre and the Old Wavre, you sail towards the Vinkeveense Plassen. Here you will find many possibilities for recreation and water sports. The Vinkeveense Plassen are home to many marinas with moorings, sanitary facilities and restaurants. A wonderful place to relax. After a visit to the Vinkeveense Plassen, you can continue your trip to picturesque Utrecht. Sail through the city canals and discover the city from the water.
