The province of Friesland has many beautiful sailing routes for a wonderful day on the water. Friesland is of course best known for the Elfstedentocht, beautiful Harlingen and national park De Alde Feanen. In this versatile province there is also plenty to discover on the water. For example, you can follow the Elfsteden sailing route. Are you more interested in history? Then follow the special sailing route through Friesland where you will discover the war stories of Oudega.

The Poelenroute

Are you planning to go boating in Friesland and do you love unspoiled nature? Then go out and enjoy the Poelengebied. The nature reserve consists of a chain of lakes, ditches and creeks. This route is not suitable for larger ships or yachts. During the trip, panoramic views alternate with dense reed beds and charming villages and farms. You start your trip in Gaastmeer and sail towards Heeg. During the trip you will make a stop in Idzegea. A small Frisian village where you will find the bird sanctuary of the Grutto. Here you can moor along the banks of the Idzegeaster Poel. Visit the bird watching tower and enjoy the beautiful Poel area.

The eleven cities sailing route

The most famous skating trip in the Netherlands is of course the Elfstedentocht. Translated this means: the eleven cities tour. But did you know that you can also do the Elfstedentocht by boat? You make a beautiful round through Friesland where your sailing route starts in Leeuwarden and ends in Bonkefeart. The sailing route is 231 km long and therefore we recommend spreading it out over several days. Along the way you can moor at various marinas. For example, visit the Frisian Ice Skating Museum in Hindeloopen or the Elfsteden bridge Bartlehiem in Wânswert.

A sailing route full of history
